NHS Long Term Plan to tackle major killer conditions - Alzheimer's Society comment

The NHS Long Term Plan, published today, promises to save almost half a million more lives with practical action on major killer conditions and investment in cutting edge treatments.

Measures outlined by NHS leaders today aim to help prevent 100,000 heart attacks, strokes and dementia cases over the next decade. The plan covers technology, early detection and a renewed focus on prevention in its ambition to stop an estimated 85,000 premature deaths each year.

Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “The NHS Long Term Plan promises new hope that people with dementia – the UK’s biggest killer – will at last gain parity with people with other diseases from our health and care services.

“In particular, we welcome the Plan’s commitment to improve support for people in the community and better coordinate care to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions, and people being discharged with nowhere to go – something our Fix Dementia Care campaign has long called for.

“However, people with dementia can’t wait 10 more years for an end to the injustice in the system. We need urgent action to see change in the coming year to address the inequity people with dementia face now. We look forward to seeing concrete proposals to join up health and social care so they work together effectively.”
