Conservative Party Press Release
Yesterday Ed Miliband defended Ken Livingstone's alleged tax avoidance, saying 'Ken Livingstone has paid every pound of tax he is required to by law', despite saying that he would 'tackle tax avoidance'.
Independent tax experts have alleged that Mr Livingstone is avoiding tax by paying income to a company he owns rather than to himself directly, meaning he pays tax at a lower rate.
This comes just months after Ed Miliband appointed Andrew Rosenfeld, a former tax exile, to a senior position in the Labour Party and received commitments for up to £1 million in donations.
Commenting, Angie Bray MP said:
"Ed Miliband says one thing on tax avoidance, then does another. He says we must ensure everyone pays their fair share in tax, but then defends Ken Livingstone's hypocrisy and accepts a huge donation from a former tax exile.
"He is no different from his Mayoral candidate, who says one thing and does another. Ken Livingstone rails against tax avoiders saying they shouldn't be allowed to vote in elections, yet avoids tax himself while standing for election.
"Unless Ed Miliband orders Ken Livingstone to stop avoiding tax, then his tough talk will simply be hypocritical posturing from a weak leader."
