Interviewing the Mayor of London in the Westminster sunshine this morning, the BBC’s Norman Smith thought he’d catch Boris out with a surprise question about the price of milk:
Norman Smith: “How much does a pint of milk cost?”
Boris Johnson: “It’s difficult to get a pint of milk in this city for less than 49p, I expect roughly 55p.”
NS: "Let me give you an easier question, how much does the Daily Telegraph cost?"
BJ: “Probably far too much."
NS: "You write for it, you don’t even know how much your own paper costs!"
BJ: "Listen, I’m not going to… bandy prices… Let me ask you… I’m delighted that you are disposed to flog the Daily Telegraph on the BBC…”
Boris seemed to flounder… but he hit back later:
BJ: “How much is a loaf of bread?”
NS: “Depends what you’re buying, but I think I got one yesterday for £1.49”
BJ: “Sounds about right. How much is a pint of beer?"
NS: “We’ll have to stop the shopping list interrogation because…"
BJ: “How much is a pint of beer?”
NS: “I am the world’s worst shopper, Boris I have to thank you for that”
BJ: “You don’t even know the price of a pint of beer…”
