Public and Commercial Services Union: More staff for Heathrow is a 'sticking plaster on a serious injury'

PCS press release

The government is "putting a sticking plaster on a serious injury" by drafting in staff to Heathrow from other areas of UK Border Agency, the Public and Commercial Services union says.

With ministers well on the way to hitting their target of 7,000 job cuts from the agency by 2014/15 - including 1,500 from the border force - the problem of under-staffing is not a temporary one, the union says.

The latest figures show total staffing in UKBA is down 22% in just two years, from around 25,000 to just under 19,500.

Today's announcement by immigration minister Damian Green that 80 UKBA staff will be drafted in to Heathrow suggests the government is more interested in preventing damaging headlines than providing the resources needed in the long-term.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "Drafting in staff from other areas of an already overstretched agency is like putting a sticking plaster on a serious injury, it will do nothing to stop the inevitable from happening.

"Everyone can see that the government's obsession with austerity isn't working and that what UKBA needs is more staff, not more cuts."
