Rachel Reeves: ICAEW's serious warning on child benefit changes

Labour Press Release

Rachel Reeves MP, Labour’s Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in
response to warnings from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England
and Wales that the government’s child benefit changes were “an operational
and reputational disaster for the government and HMRC”, said:

“This is a very serious warning from a very well respected organisation.
Ever since George Osborne announced this policy for a quick headline at the
Conservative Party conference he has ignored warnings that it was not just
unfair but simply unworkable.

“Despite the child benefit cuts coming into force in little over six
months, the government has only just published the necessary legislation
and it is a complete mess. That is why, as well as believing in the
principle of universal child benefit, we voted against this change in the
House of Commons.

“Until now George Osborne has seemed totally unwilling to heed advice from
either Labour or many of his own backbenchers who agree with us. Now that
accountancy experts are also warning his child benefit changes will be a
disaster, it’s time he finally started listening.”
