Labour press release
Chuka Umunna MP, Labour's Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on the news that the future of General Motors’ Ellesmere Port Vauxhall plant has been secured, said:
"This is fantastic news for the Ellesmere Port plant, the wider region and our economy, and ends the uncertainty which has been surrounding the plant’s future. Labour and local MPs have supported the Government’s efforts to safeguard production and jobs at Ellesmere Port and worked alongside ministers towards securing today’s outcome.
"In government, Labour set up the Automotive Council to provide long-term strategic planning and certainty in the industry and we welcome the fact that the Government has retained its role and continued with our approach. Coupled with this week’s news that the UK now has a surplus in the trade of cars, this is testament to the success of this approach and what can be achieved when government adopts an active approach, working alongside business and in partnership with unions and employees.
"We are proud of Britain’s world class car industry. Manufacturers including Nissan, Jaguar Land Rover and BMW have shown confidence by investing in and expanding their facilities here in the UK."
