Commenting on the Lib Dem no-show in this afternoon’s debate on the Welfare Reform Bill, SNP MSP Jamie Hepburn – who spoke in the debate – said:
“This is deeply disappointing and frankly shows how little the Liberal Democrats care about what is happening to our welfare system in Scotland.
“It is also rank hypocrisy from Willie Rennie. He went on TV in the Parliament this afternoon criticising the First Minister for not attending the Joint Ministerial Meeting in London – even though he was in Aberdeen winning jobs and investment for Scotland, and voting in Parliament in the afternoon – yet he and his Lib Dem colleagues didn’t bother turning up for a vital debate happening up the stairs.
“This Bill has only come about because the Lib Dems’ Westminster colleagues – in cahoots with the Tories – are making our welfare system unfair for vulnerable people.
“Actions like this entirely sum up why the Liberal Democrats are rapidly becoming extinct in Scotland.
“You might have thought that following their dismal showing at local authority elections they would be doing all they could to make themselves relevant to the people of Scotland – but clearly not.
“Had the Lib Dems argued for alternative proposals - that would have been fair enough, but they didn’t even do that.”
