Labour press release
Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, commenting on confusion
at the heart of the Ministry of Justice over the future of sentencing
policy for serious and violent criminals, said:
“Already, this Tory-led Government has chosen to abolish IPP sentences,
taking away from judges one of the key sentencing tools for dealing with
the most serious and violent offenders in society. Labour opposed this
decision, which we believe will lead to unnecessary risks to public safety.
“Now there’s genuine confusion as to whether the Government is proposing to
weaken the release test for those currently in prison serving IPP
sentences. Yesterday, Justice Minister in the Lords, Lord McNally hinted
that more of those on IPPs would be released, yet today Crispin Blunt said
there’s no plans. Labour opposes any moves that would endanger public
safety and so the public deserve the truth about the Government’s
intentions on a matter of such importance to the safety of communities up
and down the country.
