Commenting on publication of a report by the Commons Energy and Climate Change Select Committee today (Monday) which criticises UK Government plans, within the draft Energy Bill, for reform of the electricity market, SNP Energy spokesperson Mike Weir MP said:
“As the committee makes clear the UK Government’s plans are both unduly complex and unsustainable.
“So-called Contracts for Difference were introduced by the UK Government to shore-up their obsession with nuclear energy which, clearly, private sector companies are not prepared to invest in without a fixed market.
“The UK Government must look again at reform of the electricity market and concentrate on clean, green renewables investment. Ministers should forget about nuclear which has swallowed up billions in public money, and continues to do so in clean-up costs without ever being able to meet the claims of its proponents.”
