Speaking today, the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, said:
"The British Government welcomes the recent appointment by President Mursi of Dr Hisham Qandil as Prime Minister of Egypt. It is an important milestone in Egypt's transition to full civilian, democratic rule.
"We wish Dr Qandil every success as he takes office at this important time in his country's history, and encourage him in his efforts to form an inclusive government that governs on behalf of all Egyptians. The British Government will continue to support the people of Egypt and their aspirations for greater economic opportunities, political participation, freedom and human rights, and will work in close partnership with their elected leaders to that end."
