Labour party press release
Maria Eagle MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, responding to leaked correspondence between Network Rail and the Office of the Rail Regulator said:
“Passengers facing 11 per cent annual fare rises will be staggered that Network Rail bosses have the front to haggle over yet another round of bonuses. It beggars belief that the Rail Regulator has had to explain that bonuses would be inappropriate in the event of a catastrophic accident or, as is currently the case, a failure to meet performance targets.
“The Government has done absolutely nothing to fulfil the pledge in the Coalition Agreement to make Network Rail more accountable. We cannot go on with a rail industry structure that sees £3.5bn of taxpayers money handed over every year to a body with such weak corporate governance that an unacceptable bonus culture has been able to take root in this way."
