Boris has just waded his big size 10s into the #gategate saga, telling a scrum of hacks at a library opening that he was:
"very glad to see the police proposed to arrest Andrew Mitchell.."
Bojo qualified that by repeating that he'd always argued that anyone swearing at police should be arrested, got a bit confused and then moved on. Classic Boris.
But here's some intel I've got on how Mitchell was viewed in the Westminster-politico industrial complex even in Opposition.
Some years back, I'm told Mitch stormed into the CCHQ press room armed with a sheaf of newspaper front pages. Seeing other shadow ministers' great coverage that day, he stormed:
"Why am I not on the bloody front pages? Don't you know I'm the Big Swinging Dick around here?!"
Of course, this may have been an elaborate joke. But some felt he was being deadly serious and had actually lost his rag....A bit like calling a cop a Pleb.
At least he's got his wish at last: he's on the bloody front pages quite a bit these days.
UPDATE: The supersharp @schofieldkevin tells us that some spads even refer to Mitchell by his initials: 'BSD'...
