Tories launch 'Labour isn't learning' campaign

The Conservative party is launching a new campaign criticising Labour’s economic plans, which it says shows “Labour isn’t learning”.

Ahead of the Labour conference beginning in Birmingham on Sunday, the Conservatives will focus on research showing that if Labour was in power, borrowing would be £200bn higher – or £3,200 extra debt per person.

Launching the poster campaign, Tory party chairman Grant Shapps accused the Opposition’s leadership of failing to realise the mistakes made in the run-up to the financial crash in 2008.

"Labour isn't learning. They still think we can borrow our way out of the debt crisis.

"Their plans would mean borrowing over £200 billion more. They would shackle every person in this country with £3,200 more debt - over and above the debt they already ran up when they were in government.

"More spending, more borrowing, more debt - Labour isn't learning."

The new criticism comes after Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls pledged in an interview with The Guardian that Labour would carry out a “ruthless and disciplined” comprehensive review to examine all public sector spending if it won the election in 2015.

“For a Labour government in 2015, it is quite right, and the public I think would expect this, to have a proper zero-based spending review where we say we have to justify every penny and make sure we are spending in the right way.”
