Lilian Greenwood MP: Press Release
Lilian Greenwood MP, Labour’s Shadow Local Transport Minister, responding to Norman Baker’s claim during Transport Questions in the House of Commons today that bus services were not being lost, said:
“Ministers are in denial about the loss of vital bus services and rising fares. The Government’s own figures show that the speed and scale of cuts to local transport funding has already led to the loss of more than nine per cent of supported bus services outside London, while fares are up by double the rate of inflation. Norman Baker has demonstrated that he is completely out of touch with what is happening on the ground and passengers will be disappointed at his refusal to listen.
“Buses serve people from across the community, but they are especially important to people living in rural areas and those on low incomes. The Government’s failure to act to protect the vital lifelines that buses provide are yet further evidence that we are not all in it together.”
