SNP welcome widening access drive at Scottish Universities
SNP press release
The SNP are today welcoming Scotland’s 19 universities committing to opening up greater opportunities to students from all backgrounds by signing a joint Universities Scotland statement on widening access.
Joan McAlpine MSP, a member of the Education and Culture, said:
“This shows a real commitment from Scotland’s universities to play their part in widening access to universities. It is essential that university becomes option for all of Scotland’s young people – regardless of their background.
“I firmly believe that allowing people into higher education based on the ability to learn not the ability to pay is the right way forward for an equal and more prosperous nation to flourish.
“Keeping university tuition free for Scottish-domiciled students is vital to ensuring that as many of our young people as possible can benefit from higher education.
“The SNP Government’s introduction of a minimum income guarantee of £7,250 per year to be introduced in the academic year of 2013 in tandem with free entry into universities along with Widening Access Agreements – and now a commitment from the universities themselves - is a sure way of continuing the for equal opportunities in education for generations to come in Scotland.”
