A Companion of Honour has been recommended for Lord Paddy Ashdown in the 2015 New Year’s Honours list.

Dr Andrew McDonald has received a Companion Honour for services to parliament, and David Amess, MP for Southend West, will receive a Knighthood.

A controversial honour is an OBE for David Ward, route managing director for the south-east, as today Network rail boss Mark Carne said he would wave his bonus over the Christmas train disruptions.

Paul Silk, Chair of the Commission for Devolution in Wales has been recommended for a Knighthood, and Anne McGuire MP will be made a Dame.

Conservative donor Sir Theodore Agnew, who gave the party £134,000 between 2007 and 2009, will be knighted.

Installers of the Tower of London poppy exhibition Paul Cummings and Tom Piper will be awarded an MBE.

Other well-known names include a DBE for actress Kristin Scott Thomas, a knighthood for actor John Hurt, a DBE for the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and OBEs for actor James Corden and actress Emily Watson.

Meanwhile, Bernard Jenkin, chair of the Commons Public Administration Committee, has called for a formal inquiry into leaks of the Honours List names. He suggested the names released in the press before the formal announcement looked like a “political stunt”.

Head of the civil service Sir Bob Kerslake said he was “concerned” and the matter would be looked into it.

The Government is reponsible for stories "knocking disabled people", Labour's Shadow Welfare Minister has claimed.

Writing for PoliticsHome, Anne McGuire said: "The feeding to the media of press releases and distortion of figures, and the calling into question whether people really are disabled is causing real harm."

She also accused ministers and their advisers of "creating an atmosphere that is causing fear and uncertainty in the lives of disabled people up and down the country".
