Stories involving Anne Milton

Smoking display ban begins

A ban on tobacco displays comes into force in England from today, with ministers insisting it will help reduce the number of young people taking up smoking.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley told BBC News the move was designed "to arrive at a place where we literally no longer see smoking as a normal part of life."

The ban will initially apply only to large shops and supermarkets, with smaller businesses exempt until 2015, and means cigarettes and other products will have to be kept below the counter.

Conservative backbencher Philip Davies called the ban "ridiculous".

"Yet another triumph for the nanny state - health zealots will never be satisfied though," the Shipley MP tweeted.

Conservative minister suggests car ban on Sundays

Public Health Minister Anne Milton has put forward a proposal that roads are closed on Sundays in an attempt to make it safer for children to play outside. Ms Milton said that she has seen the idea work in Colombia, but the Department of Health said that it was "something for local councils to consider".

PM 'won't employ extra midwives'

David Cameron has backtracked on his election vow to hire 3,000 new midwives, with health minister Anne Milton telling MPs that it was "totally ridiculous" to concentrate on staffing levels, the Sunday Mirror reports.

Minister in Northerner stereotype row

Public Health Minister Anne Milton has caused a row after implying that northerners’ personal failings have left them with high rates of smoking, alcoholism and STDs. The Conservative MP was criticised by Labour’s Chi Onwurah who said that poor health indicators were often a result of poverty and that the minister's attitudes were "insulting".

Milton: Politicians better past 45

Public Health Minister Anne Milton has claimed that people wanting to enter politics should wait until the age of 45. Ms Milton, herself aged 55, told the Royal College of Nursing conference in Liverpool that it is only at that stage that you “know stuff”. Her comments will be seen as critical of the Coalition’s most senior figures; David Cameron, Nick Clegg and George Osborne are all under 45.

Ministers are set to demand a reduction in the number of tranquillisers prescribed on the NHS. Up to 1.5 million people in the UK are thought to be dependent on prescription drugs such as Valium.
