Response to HK visit ban 'not enough' - MPs

The Foreign Office's response to a Chinese ban on British MPs visiting Hong Kong does not go far enough, the Foreign Affairs Committee has said.

In a report published this afternoon, the Committee agreed with Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire that the ban, imposed amid pro-democracy protests, was “unprecedented”.

But it added: “We consider that the Minister’s reply did not go far enough,” the report states. “We call on the Government to respond more robustly”.

Labelling the ban an “obstruction to the conduct of our parliamentary duties”, the MPs suggest that the FCO should raise the issue with the EU and summon the Chinese Ambassador in London to the Foreign Office to make formal written complaints to counterparts in Beijing and Hong Kong.

The news follows an emergency debate in the Commons over the issue.

The UK’s Ambassador to China has already raised the issue with three ministers in Beijing and other officials have also voiced their concerns.
