Tory MP calls for rule change on 'prejudiced' gay blood donations

A Conservative MP is calling on the Government to change rules banning sexually active gay men from giving blood.

Michael Fabricant told BBC Radio 4 it was illogical and prejudiced that sexually active straight men could give blood, while gay men are unable to give blood unless they have been celibate for 12 months.

But the chairman of the Government's Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs, Professor James Forsyth, said the ban was based on science and denied it was old fashioned.

Labour MP Denis MacShane and Conservative MP Michael Fabricant have written to the Daily Telegraph criticising the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority. Mr MacShane said he had "thousands of pounds of unpaid bills since May 6 as the new system simply does not work".

Tory MPs clash over by-election

Two Tory MPs have rowed over the party's attempts to win the upcoming Feltham and Heston by-election. In emails leaked to the Mail on Sunday, Col Bob Stewart launches a furious attack on Conservative Whip Michael Fabricant for asking his Commons staff to campaign in the area, saying the party has "absolutely no chance" of winning.
