Stories involving John Mann

Mann urges leaders to look for child abuse evidence

Labour MP John Mann is writing to party leaders to urge them to ask their whips to search through MPs' files about allegations of child abuse.

Mr Mann recently handed over evidence of ‘abuse parties’ to the police, which he said indicated abuse and cover-ups at the top levels of parliament in the 1970s and 80s. Police are currently probing reports of three murders linked to the alleged VIP paedophile ring.

Last month, Mr Mann also demanded an inquiry into historical child abuse in Nottinghamshire care homes.

The new expenses watchdog is facing a backlash from MPs, who claim the new rules will force them to lay off staff and compromise services to constituents. Labour MP John Mann has said the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority "have no idea what a modern MP does."

Former minister Kate Hoey has called on Gordon Brown to resign as leader of the Labour party, saying it would be impossible for the party to acheive "renewal" without a new leader. Her comments come after Labour MP John Mann called on Mr Brown to step down.

MP's wife sent dead bird

A dead bird was posted to the wife of John Mann, the MP has revealed.

Jo Mann, a newly elected councillor, arrived home from her first council meeting yesterday to find the package.  It made her feel “really sick”, she said.

Mr Mann said the couple would not be intimidated, and that he hoped the perpetrator would be found swiftly and “given the maximum punishment possible”.

A number of Labour MPs, including Kate Hoey and John Mann, have called for Gordon Brown to step aside as Labour party leader in the wake of Thursday's election. Other MPs have said the party was defeated on Thursday and does not have a mandate to govern.

David Miliband's bid to be leader of the Labour party was boosted today as nominations by constituency Labour parties closed with him 17 ahead of his brother. David also won a 'primary' vote conducted by one MP through a postal ballot of local members.
