Detectives ran criminal checks on Labour MPs

The Leveson Inquiry is set to investigate evidence that private detectives bought access to data, including criminal record checks on a number of senior Labour politicians. Among those claimed to have been targeted are ex-Prime Minister Gordon Brown, former Agriculture Minister Nick Brown and backbencher Martin Salter.


Opposition from Harriet Harman and Labour whips mean that Commons' reforms designed to strengthen the independence of parliament could be scrapped.


Winterton new chief whip

Rosie Winterton has been elected unopposed as Labour’s new chief whip after Nick Brown said he could not continue in his position. Ed Miliband said: "Rosie is highly respected both in and out of Westminster and I have no doubt that she will excel in her new role".
