Lib Dems soften on 50p tax
Liberal Democrat deputy leader Simon Hughes has indicated he would not support the 50p tax rate if "it's shown to be not very tax efficient", but in that case other means of taxation should be found for the richest. "Perhaps we have to do other things for wealthy people," he said.
Speaking to the Guardian, Mr Hughes also branded elements of the Conservative party as "ruthless" and "extreme," saying "the Tory party is absolutely not the dominant force in British politics that it used to be."
In an interview with The Independent, Nick Clegg had said that there "is no way" the Conservatives would be able to drop the 50p tax rate for high income earners unless allowances for the lowest paid earners were raised.
