Govt will learn lessons from M5
The M5 has reopened following the crash which killed seven people on Friday night. A police spokesman said their main line of inquiry had moved to the fireworks display held at the side of the motorway. He said: "From witness evidence there was very significant smoke across the carriageway that caused a bank, similar to a fog bank, which was very distracting and difficult to drive through."
Transport Secretary Justine Greening told Sky News that her department would turn its thoughts to "what lessons there are from this, as and when they emerge". 51 people are reported to have been injured in the crash near Taunton, the worst motorway accident in recent memory. Road safety campaigners are now calling on the Government to end their proposal to raise the national speed limit.
