Labour rethinks European stance

Labour rethinks European stance

Douglas Alexander has warned it would be “familiar but fatal” for the Labour Party not to change its arguments about the UK’s relationship with the European Union, and called for “fundamental reform within Europe”.

The Shadow Foreign Secretary told BBC’s Today programme: “We need to make the case for fundamental reform within Europe, rooted in the new emerging realities that we’re seeing round about us.”

Mr Alexander's words come as Labour rethink its stance on the UK's relationship with the European Union, with the party set to oppose any transfer of powers to the European Union that would damage British growth. Writing in the Guardian, the Shadow Foreign Secretary also reveals Labour would use the current turmoil to "seize this opportunity to safeguard the rights of non-euro members" within the EU.
