Burstow: Change4Life not a subsidy
Health minister Paul Burstow has denied that the Government's Change4Life healthy eating promotion is effectively a subsidy for certain supermarkets. But he admitted that despite funding an advertising campaign, the Government had no guarantee of what and how big discounts would be offered by the supermarkets involved.
Mr Burstow said: “They haven’t said we’re going to put X amount in; what they’ve said is we’re going to run a whole series of these offers. No the Government is not subsidising it; we’re putting an advertising campaign in to support and raise awareness.
He also denied the scheme effectively 'plugged' certain supermarkets: “What we’ve said is there’s no closed shop here. If other supermarkets want to come on board and be part of the Change4Life campaign, then they can actually be involved in that way and they can offer these sort of deals as well.
