Civil service 'smallest since war'
Cabinet Office minster Francis Maude has claimed his efficiency reforms to government operations have created a "leaner, more effective Whitehall". The Efficiency and Reform Group within the Cabinet Office is set to deliver at least £5bn in savings.  According to the Cabinet Office, the size of the Civil Service has been reduced by 43,000 to 444,000 — a fall of 9 per cent — and is at its smallest since the war.
