Holyrood confirms minimum alcohol price
The Scottish Government has announced plans to introduce a minimum alcohol price of 50p per unit.
The figure, 5p higher than initially proposed in the last parliament, comes as the UK Government plans a 40p per unit minimum price for England and Wales.
The SNP hopes the measure will lead to a reduction in hospital admissions and deaths through alcohol abuse.
Making the announcement during a visit to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said "too many Scots" were "drinking themselves to death".
"The problem affects people of all walks of life," she said.
"Introducing a minimum price per unit will enable us to tackle these problems, given the clear link between affordability and consumption."
