Umunna: Lagarde is no oracle
Chuka Umunna has launched a strong attack on the head of the International Monetary Fund, questioning Christine Lagarde’s impartiality and saying she is not an “oracle” on the right economic policies.
In an interview with the BBC’s Sunday Politics, the Shadow Business Secretary pointed to George Osborne’s support of Ms Lagarde to become the IMF’s chief as a reason for her support for the Government’s deficit reduction plan, which she reaffirmed last week.
“You’re not going to get Christine Lagarde making strongly strident comments against Government policy given George Osborne sponsored her for her position.”
He also questioned the overall importance of expert economists’ predictions.
“What I am saying is that you have to look at what she says in the context of her relationship with the Government and also I’m saying she’s not necessarily an oracle on these matters. Economists – there are a mix of views. Many of them got it wrong.”
