Climate change floods threat
Four times as many homes and businesses in the UK will be at risk from flooding in the UK if flood defences are not improved to meet the threat of climate change, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has said.
The committee blames the Government for defunding flood defences. The Department for the Environment said flood money was "being spent more effectively than ever before" but Lord Krebs, CCC adaptation sub-committee chair, said: "We must take adaptation more seriously if we are to manage the growing risk of floods and droughts."
Head of the Environment Agency Lord Smith told BBC Radio the Government was reducing expenditure on flood defences but that the money was being made up by local government, development, and property speculation.
