£9bn of rail investment to be announced
David Cameron and Nick Clegg will tomorrow announce plans for £9bn of investment into Britain's rail network between 2014 and 2019.
The funding will contribute to existing projects such as London's Crossrail as well as new schemes, including the creation of a Northern Hub to increase rail capacity in the region, and an extension of electrification across the country.
But Shadow Transport Secretary Maria Eagle said the plans would take too long to have an effect, claiming "It is rail investment now, not post-dated cheques, that will deliver jobs and growth".
"Setting out plans for way beyond the next election helps the industry to plan ahead, but does nothing to boost the economy now," she added.
