Labour probes school charity status
The next Labour government could strip private schools of their charity status if they do not serve the community, shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg has said. The move would increase tax on schools that lost their status, reducing a subsidy of around £100m a year. Mr Twigg said many private schools took their obligations seriously, citing Manchester Grammar School as an example. He also admitted to the Guardian that Labour spent excessive money on new school buildings while in power. Ofsted has also been criticised today, after it emerged that at least five 'lead inspectors' do not hold qualified teacher status.
