Farmers reach milk agreement
Dairy farmers and processing firms have reached an agreement in their dispute over prices, the Government has said.
Farming Minister Jim Paice chaired a meeting between the National Farmers Union, and Dairy UK following protests over the price farmers are paid for milk.
Dairy UK said it was "very pleased" that a Heads of Agreement had been reached on a voluntary code of practive, designed to give farmers more bargaining power.
"There is now a lot of work to be done in taking the code to the implementation stage and we are committed to doing this," it said.
Writing in today's Daily Telegraphy, Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman warned the entire dairy industry was “at risk” if an agreement was not reached.
"The only way forward is for everybody to get round the table, to be open, honest and constructive, and to focus on the long-term future of our dairy sector," she said.
