Over 100 cyclists arrested
Over 100 cyclist were arrested near the Olympic stadium during the Olympic opening ceremony.
The cyclists were participating in a "Critical Mass" cycling event that normally passes through the area each month. Police had however banned the procession because of its proximity to the Olympics.
Speaking from a protest march in East London this afternoon, Labour MP John Mcdonnell said there was “real anxiety” about the “militarisation” of the area in the build-up to the Olympics.
“There’s real worries. Last night there were a number of arrests of people who were peacefully protesting, cycling. I think it’s been very, very heavy-handed," he told BBC News.
“There’s real anxieties expressed by local people about the militarisation of their area, the missiles on their flats. I think what’s happened is the authorities have gone over the top and there are real worries now. That shouldn’t even happen again.”
