Straw embroiled in Hillsborough row
Jack Straw has been drawn into the Hillsborough disaster row as it emerged he
had made up his mind within five weeks of coming to power that there was no need for a fresh inquiry into the tragedy. According to the Independent on Sunday, Mr Straw felt the public needed an independent figure to reach the same conclusion, and when he met Lord Justice Stuart-Smith, who was appointed to lead the review, told him that Home Office officials had already concluded that "there was not sufficient evidence to justify a new inquiry".
