Cam ready for independence fight

Cam ready for independence fight

David Cameron has said he will fight to "keep the family together" after signing a deal with Alex Salmond to hold a referendum on Scottish independence.

Today's deal paves the way for the referendum in autumn 2014, with a single Yes/No question on Scotland leaving the UK.

Speaking to broadcasters he said he would fight for a No vote but stressed that he expected other parties such as Labour to support him.

"I’ll be arguing to keep the family together, the keep the Kingdom united, but I won’t be alone," he said. "Mine will just be one voice of many."

It is understood the deal signed today commits both governments to working together constructively in the best interests of the people of Scotland, whatever the outcome of the referendum.

It also allows 16 and 17-year-olds to take part in the ballot.

Downing Street this morning warned that the decision was the biggest the country faced for 300 years - with separation having "irreparable consequences".

Mr Salmond today hailed the agreement on a Scottish independence referendum as "a milestone" for the country.

He told reporters that today was "a historic day for Scotland" which would now pave the way for "substantive arguments about what’s in the best interests of the Scottish people".

He was positive about his chances of victory but also stressed that he and Mr Cameron had agree "to continue to work constructively" whatever the outcome of the referendum.

But a ITV/ComRes poll this evening finds that that over half of British adults - including 55% of Scots - agree that Scotland's economy would suffer it if became an independent nation.
