Shapps backs EU referendum
The Tory party co-chairman Grant Shapps said a referendum on Britain's relationship with the European Union could be held within a year of the next general election.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Mr Shapps also says there is a "consensus" that it would be “cleaner, clearer and more efficient” to hold a referendum after a renegotiation of the UK's relationship.
Former Defence Secretary Liam Fox goes one further, writing in the Sun on Sunday that the Government "need to make clear at the outset we can conceive of leaving the EU if we are unable to achieve the relationship we want".
