PM 'baffled' by Salmond legal advice row
David Cameron said Alex Salmond’s decision to try to stop the publication of whether or not he had taken legal advice on Scotland’s European Union membership was “baffling”.
The Scottish First Minister had been branded a “liar” by one Labour MSP after he gave an interview last March that he had taken the advice of law officers on whether an independent Scotland would retain its EU membership, yet Nicola Sturgeon told the Scottish Parliament yesterday that the Scottish Government had “not sought specific legal advice” on the issue.
The Prime Minister said at PMQs today: “[It is] A truly baffling situation which is we were told by the First Minister that he had legal advice...it turns out now they didn't have any legal advice at all, I think what this shows is when you shine the spotlight on the case for separation that the SNP put it completely falls apart.”
