Villiers slams NI violence
The Northern Ireland Secretary has condemned threats made against Northern Irish politicians as “nothing less than an attack on democracy”.
Answering an Urgent Question in the Commons, Theresa Villiers said those who rioted and issued death threats after the decision to limit the flying of the Union flag at Belfast city hall were “dishonouring and shaming” the flag.
Alliance MP Naomi Long is one of those who has been issued a death threat, while a police car guarding her office was attacked with petrol bombs last night.
“The right of elected representatives to go about their daily business without the threat or fear of intimidation is one of the hallmarks of our democracy,” Ms Villiers told MPs.
