Neutral civil service 'in peril' - Labour
The existence of a politically neutral civil service is "in peril", Labour has said, in response to plans to give ministers more say in appointing top officials. Lord Hunt, Labour's Deputy Leader in the Lords, said the Cabinet Office was "essentially bullying the Civil Service Commission and threatening new legislation in order to give secretaries of state the power to appoint permanent secretaries".
