Giving ministers more say over the appointment of senior civil servants would not “imperil” Whitehall’s independence, the Cabinet Office minister has said.
Francis Maude said there would still be "fair and open selection on the basis of merit" and noted previous examples of ministerial input in the recruitment process, the Financial Times reports.
Meanwhile as part of a drive for greater transparency in government departments, the objectives of permanent secretaries will be published online, it was announced today.
