Leveson 'chilling effect' on journalism
Lord Justice Leveson's proposals for journalists to lose certain legal protections could undermine investigative journalism, according to a former crime reporter. Steve Panter said the recommendations on both the Data Protection Act and the Police and Criminal Evidence Act were "bad news for all those who cherish a free press". In 2002, Lord Justice Leveson "intimated to Mr Panter that he could be jailed" for refusing to identify a source.
