Cheaper GP prescriptions could save £1bn
The NHS could save £1bn every year if GPs purchased the cheapest drugs available. Research by Open Health Care UK and Mastodon C found that large numbers of GPs were prescribing branded drugs despite the availability of cheaper alternatives of equal effectiveness. Sir Bruce Keogh, medical director of the NHS Commissioning Board, said sharing such information can both improve quality of treatment and "free up money for reinvestment in other parts of the NHS".
