Airbus apprentices put their hearts into learning for National Apprentice Week

Apprentices at the Airbus plant in Broughton were stayin’ alive for the 10th anniversary of National Apprentice Week, learning how to perform lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as part of a mass training session.

The apprentices were taught the ‘Call Push Rescue’ model of CPR training, using a self-directed learning film and an inflatable manikin to practice the techniques on. The training is currently being rolled out across the Broughton plant as part of Airbus’ two year charity partnership with the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

By the end of the partnership, it is hoped all 10,000 Airbus employees in the UK will be trained on how to perform CPR, as part of the BHF’s Nation of Lifesavers campaign - a nationwide initiative to ensure all young people and adults learn the lifesaving CPR skills they need to intervene when someone suffers a cardiac arrest. The campaign aims to create 5 million potential lifesavers by 2020.

Georgia Hunt, an undergraduate engineering apprentice who took part in the training, said: “I knew the basics of CPR before the session, but I wasn’t sure how hard to push on the chest or the rhythm of compressions. I definitely feel more comfortable delivering CPR after receiving the training.”

Hannah Lloyd, Fundraising Account Manager at the BHF, added: “Thousands of lives are being lost each year because people lack the confidence and the skills to step in and save a life when someone collapses with a cardiac arrest. Knowing how to perform CPR when you’re faced with this ultimate medical emergency could literally mean the difference between life and death.

“By training their staff in how to perform CPR, Airbus is playing a crucial role in helping us create a Nation of Lifesavers and dramatically improving survival rates from cardiac arrest.”

National Apprentice Week is an annual event organised by the National Apprenticeship Service, which celebrates the various apprentice and trainee schemes available across the UK. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the event and the aim is to encourage more people to fast track their career opportunities by applying for an apprenticeship.
