AstraZeneca unions tell board to resist Pfizer takeover
Union representatives and shop stewards from AstraZeneca met today (Thursday 8 May) and made it clear they do not support the Pfizer bid to take over AstraZeneca.
The union reps from GMB and Unite do not believe it is in the interests of AstraZeneca workers to be taken over by Pfizer, nor is it in the public interest.
Pfizer's track record in takeovers has been one of job losses and closures across the world.
The “guarantees” given by Pfizer to the prime minister, David Cameron will in the union reps' opinion prove to be worthless in the long run.
Union reps expressed their disappointment that no response had been given by business secretary Vince Cable to requests for meetings.
In any event the union reps call on Dr Cable to block the proposed takeover as it is not in the interests of the workforce in the United Kingdom.
Union reps also call upon the board of AstraZeneca to continue to resist strongly the hostile approaches from Pfizer with a view to a takeover of AstraZeneca.
Allan Black, national officer from the GMB and Tony Burke, assistant general secretary of Unite will be both giving evidence at the House of Commons business select committee hearing next Tuesday.
