Commenting on a new study by the TUC, which found the number of people working excessive hours has risen by 15 per cent since 2010, Adrian Prandle, director of economic strategy and negotiations at the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), said:
“This study shows what teachers already feel – that they are working too many hours to the detriment of children’s education and their own health. At almost half a million no other sector has more people working in excess of 48 hours a week, and the Government needs to address the 31 per cent rise in the number of education staff doing so since 2010.
“Nicky Morgan’s workload challenge was very clear about the issue of unnecessary work caused by an ineffective but high stakes accountability system, and the consequences of widespread reform of curriculum and qualifications. But ministers have chosen to do little about it. This is a problem that requires significant action and a fundamental culture change in our schools and colleges, not tinkering at the edges.”
