Following the publication of new guidelines for appropriate levels of alcohol consumption by the UKs Chief Medical Officers, Anne Godfrey, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), said:

“It’s clear from the research that the more alcohol you consume, especially if you drink regularly or ‘binge drink’, the more likely you are to cause irreversible damage to your personal health. Excessive alcohol consumption doesn’t just affect individuals, however, as drinking also plays a significant role in the rise of anti-social behaviour, violence and poverty in local communities.

“We welcome the new guidelines from the UK’s Chief Medical Officers and support the benefits for personal health and well-being that come with drinking less alcohol. Unit pricing would also be an effective tool in helping people reduce the amount they drink.”
