Responding to Darren Jones MP, ESA welcomes robust enforcement by the Environment Agency because consistent, effective, regulatory action will help drive poor performance out of our sector.
Statement issued on behalf of the Environmental Services Association (ESA:
"ESA members commit to the highest standards and facilities operated by our members are subject to scrutiny and regulation by the Environment Agency. They are also subject to local planning decisions and conditions, made by representatives of the communities in which they are situated.
Although decaying organic matter present in waste naturally has the potential to attract pests, there are many methods used to control and manage this risk, so a properly-functioning facility should not have a sustained pest problem. If these controls fail, or are not employed, and pests become a nuisance, the Environment Agency has sufficient powers of enforcement to demand urgent corrective action - which may include ceasing or prohibiting operations.
The recycling and waste management facilities operated at Avonmouth, and across the UK, are vital for recovering value from the waste material we produce as a society, and help avoid the need to send waste to landfill. They create jobs and provide an economic uplift to the communities they serve, but are also heavily regulated to ensure those communities are well protected. The ESA welcomes robust enforcement by the Environment Agency because consistent, effective, regulatory action will help drive poor performance out of our sector.”
