Fuel poverty is a bigger issue 'than the cost of fuel' - charity
Responding to an article by Tory MP Derek Thomason fuel poverty, the charity Turn2ussays fuel efficiency is 'an important party of the solution.'
Fuel Poverty debates have become something of a seasonal tradition at this time of year, but with the figures released at the tail end of last year revealing a surge in excess winter deaths, many of those directly resulting from cold homes, the topic has been especially high on the agenda this year.

Our No Cold Homes campaign, which we launched in November, aimed at highlighting the causes of fuel poverty as well as, crucially, what the solutions are. One of the outcomes of the research that we conducted as part of the campaign was that in too many cases there is support available, whether it be special rates from the energy supplier or support in the form or welfare benefits or charitable grants, but the most vulnerable are not aware that it is out there.
The issue is bigger than the cost of fuel too. Our campaign highlighted that those worried about covering the cost of fuel are struggling with other costs too. Fuel efficiency is an important part of the solution, and one of the areas of our work has been to support those on low incomes afford such measure, but the broader issue must be addressed if we are to find a long term solution.
We have put together all of the support available on our website so that those struggling can find the help they need, it also provides an easy place to direct those seeking support. I welcome todays debate as it keeps the spotlight firmly on this critical issue.
