GDC moving in right direction but still has some way to go, says DDU

Medical Defence Union

The Annual Review of Performance GDC 2015/16 shows the regulator has improved its performance but still has some way to go when it comes to the fitness to practise process, the Dental Defence Union (DDU) says.

The review, undertaken by the Professional Standards Authority, shows the GDC met 7 out of 10 standards in fitness to practise and all standards in other categories last year.

DDU deputy head Leo Briggs said things were moving in the right direction at the GDC, but the DDU would continue to work with the regulator to further improve the fitness to practise process.

“We hope things will improve further now that GDC Case Examiners have started work, as they should help to address concerns earlier in the fitness to practise process. The DDU will be monitoring the impact of the Case Examiners to ensure they achieve the desired outcome for our members.

“We want to make sure that the fitness to practise process becomes more efficient, proportionate and fairer for all involved, without compromising safety.”
