GMB industrial action looms at RAF Cranwell as European multinational ISS rips off workers

MP has done nothing to protect constituents from exploitation, says union.

GMB members at RAF Cranwell will be balloted for industrial action unless their foreign multinational employer increases its paltry pay offer.

ISS, who were awarded the contract for facility services at the base, have reduced staffing numbers, attacked the terms and conditions of existing staff and employed new workers on poverty wages.

GMB’s policy is that profit-seeking contractors have no place in the Ministry of Defence and that ancillary services should be provided by directly employed workers who will spend their money in the local community.

Bert Schouwenburg, GMB National Officer, said:

“Danish multinational ISS turned over nearly £9 billion in 2015 and the CEO ‘earned’ £2.3 million.

“Yet our members looking after RAF personnel at Cranwell will get virtually nothing.

“Unless the company put some money on the table, we shall be left with little alternative but to consider industrial action.

“When people go to the ballot boxes in Sleaford and North Hykeham - they should think twice about returning MP Caroline Johnson.

“She voted to get Britain out of the EU, therefore restricting immigration and the ability of working people to defend their rights - yet does absolutely nothing to support constituents being ripped off by a European company.

“The money being taken out of the community for the benefit of ISS shareholders should be in the pockets of our hard-working members.

“Profit-seeking private contractors have no place in public service be they from here or overseas.”
